Sustainable Family Living & Eating

Updated: Jan 21, 2019

Hi here goes an intro to myself and my blog,

I'm Ellie, mum of a nearly four year old girl and 9 week old boy, wife to a shift worker and a fledgling business owner in suburban London. Life is a juggle, sometimes a struggle, there is never enough time, and I could definitely be better organised.

Like many people I want to make the most of life. I have a modest list of wants: spend time with my kids, family and friends, be a good parent, be relatively healthy, enjoy my work, have a comfortable lifestyle, enjoy treats (mainly cake and beer though not necessarily in that order) and the odd night out with my mates (where I may or may not drink too much cheap wine, forget I gave up smoking several years ago, tell everyone I love them, challenge strangers to thumb war and have an undeniable urge to eat kebab).

All the while being a half decent member of the human race, having some respect for the planet I live on. I want the same for my family (minus the beer and wine for the kids).

Sometimes I achieve those things but usually with varying degrees of success and usually not all at the same time. Fairly mundane ambitions perhaps but as you get older the raw ambition of youth fades, or at least priorities change (never was a cliché more true),along with the likelihood of 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep (aka motherhood!)

Following the frankly terrifying IPCC report on climate change published last year my hubby and I decided to stop just tutting at the tele and using the outraged emoticons/hashtags on social media and actually get off our back sides to start to change the way we live to embrace a more sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Without wanting to sound overly dramatic we don’t want a world of increasingly volatile weather conditions, widespread famine and rising sea levels to be the world left for our children. We also want to set an example to them, something along the lines of taking responsibility, making positive actions to change situations and being decent members of society (or something like that)

As a household we decided to address our food purchasing and eating habits as well as fuel consumption to start with. We are not becoming vegan or vegetarian, at least not in the short term, and I hesitate to say we are becoming flexitarian, mainly because I don’t really know what that means and it sounds a bit faddy! Why not go the whole hog and become vegetarian or vegan? Well we have small children and at the time we started I was eight months pregnant. Humans as far as I understand it are designed to be omnivorous and I want to ensure that we are getting all the right nutrition. Plus we enjoy eating meat! We did however, as a household commit to reducing our meat and dairy consumption by 50% to start with to be replaced with more veg and pulses. To try and buy as sustainably as we can and to try and eliminate our food waste.

I have started this blog to track our successes and failures in that regard so it will be a mixture of recipes, zero waste hacks, shopping ideas and observations on family life and motherhood. Mainly to amuse myself and hopefully meet some other people trying similar so I can nick their ideas..... share, I mean share ideas!

This is not going to be a beautifully photographed Instagram white lifestyle feature. I just don't have the time, inclination or technical ability to use more than a phone filter and perhaps more to the point I don't live that life. I am pre the Instagram generation and anyway imperfect is always, in my experience, more interesting... though I am prepared to throw in some random semi inspirational quotes. Here goes :

“There is no exquisite beauty… without some strangeness in the proportion.” ― Edgar Allan Poe
